In the 1970s, only 14 red wolves roamed the planet. Today, there are about 300, with many reintroduced into the wild. The exhibit honors the 40-year recovery program and the zoo’s role in it.
WOW!!!
That's awesome Tired!! Are you going on Saturday?

They have been working hard out here at Northwest Trek, Wolf Haven and Point Defiance at making the habitats much nicer ! Years back I used to right some real nasty letters to them of the small inadequate facilities they had for them. It is so great to see the Red Wolf making a come back!!

Oh Tired... this is really good news!!!!
the zoo began its red wolf breeding program in 1973, and 14 years later released four adult pairs into their natural habitat.
That is what I really like to hear. I'm so glad they are making a come back. Thanks a lot for the article. I wish I could vote it up again. (((Tired♥))))

This is really cool! I would love to see some pictures of the facility but I did a short search and could only find two pics of the wolves.
I've clipped this to the Good News Wednesday group.

This is awesome news! Northwest Trek is a seriously neat place, and the Zoo at Pt. Defiance is also quite excellent.
That dinosaur exhibit a few years back was quite something to behold! I just have to chuckle every time I think about it -- one of the dinosaurs spit on my then four year old nephew. He went on and on for days, if not weeks, "That dinosaur 'stpit on me...!" Okay, okay, okay. (Sorry, I digress.)
Anyway, I am excited to see these wolves make a comeback. But 300 is still a low number. Lots more work to do here, but I have nothing but kudos the Trek and Defiance for their efforts and successes on this front.

LOL Piper you went to that too !! I took my (at the time) Girl friends grand kids they were very young at the time and it gave them one of those exciting/frightened chills. The next weekend I took them and the dogs to the Spanaway park they were excited and not listening welll so whenever they weren't looking I would make a growling noise and telll them to be careful there were still Dinos here ! They never left my side ! awww memories !!

TiredofIt, Great line: dinosaurs are still lurking. I wish I could have used it, only I would have been afraid hearing about the "stpit." :-)
Kids and animals are just the best! :-)

Tiredofit-946833 This seed is interesting. I didn't know about the number of red wolves in existence.
The story about the new housing for the pair transferred back into the park was pleasant.
