I have always had a love/fascination with wolves, researched pros and cons of having a hybrid as a "pet". The first thing I learned was you cannot "own" a wolf mix dog, it is a family member and will take a place in your pack. You need lots of room and alot of patience and time to really get to know your new member. My first experience was rough, Bandit was already 2 years old when I rescued him from the pound. At that time I didn't even know he was a hybrid . After a visit to the vet for shots etc I was informed that he had a mix of border collie and wolf in him. Well that explained his consistent attempt at dominating the home. He was very high strung and it was rough we could not keep him where we lived and had to put him at a family members home in the country. He was not happy there and escaped into the wild. The place we put him was 18 mi from where I lived so we could see him everyday till we could get a place with a large yard, 2 weeks after his escape he was found dead o the side of the road just 6 blocks from my home! I think he was coming to find me, this made me feel severe guilt for leaving him. After another year of researching i found Tasha, A female Malamute and wolf mix. She was 8weeks old and the first time I saw her she cuddled up to my neck and i knew she was the right 1. A female hybrid with it's instinct is much easier to deal with and will not fight as much as a male for a dominate place. My girl is very spoiled and loved. She is my best friend and protector. Tasha is very intelligent, more then any animal I have ever had in my life. Friends and other she comes into contact with are always asking how I "trained" her to do what she does, and how I get her to stay with me (no leash) listening so well. Well I haven't "trained" her I have just told her NO if something is wrong and she stops, the rest I just talk to her and well somehow she seems to understand me and listens. When I stated earlier that she is "spoiled" well that is what most people tell me, but for me it is just loved and cared for. You see I cook for her, she will at times eat some "dog food" but that is just to balance out her diet on the days I can not make her meals. We eat together everyday and she changed my diet so I eat alot healthier now. We enjoy boneless chicken breast with rice and veggies, Roast, steak and on occasion hamburger but she is picky there, NEVER McDonalds, she won't touch it ! I only use low sodium seasoning/bouillon and she loves fish (I don't but she is worth it). Tasha will be 4 years old on the 10th of May and per her vet she is strong, healthy and she loves her too ! Now when it comes to other animals she loves them all, (unless they appear threatening) My girlfriend had a pekineses (see photo) that Tasha would play with and mother (wish I could attach vid) She would swim in the lake and the Ducks would not even flee they would swim with her. Here at home we have a Finch family that fly down around her and eat her crumbs along with a Blue Jay couple that has been using her loose hair for nesting material. Can't wait to see how this might influence the young ones when they start flying. With Humans she is more protective,of me and not sure of many that come around her. She has only come close 2 times to "snapping" at people. Once an old friend at a barbecue came up behind me and did a hello slap on my shoulder and this made her jump over me at him (I caught her ) but he apologized to her for scaring her! The other time another female friend came up to hug me (but didn't get Tashas permission first) and Tasha took a stance between us till I told her it was OK and I let her smell the friend and then I hugged her. It seems to be ok for me to approach others but not them approach me. Now with her being part Malamute she has the partial "speech" ability to mimic sounds ie.. Mama, I luv u, and she is now good at a**hole when my buddy comes over ! Man he loves that. If yo ask her if she loves you she will bow to you and (in a dog voice) say "i love you " back.
She can do most basic tricks sit, bow, five, but the one I love most is if you ask her if she is sexy she will howl at you and it sounds like a long WOOO HOOO! Now I now someone will ask what percentage of wolf she is, but What you read in ads and such are guesses, the only way to really tell is testing and I can't afford it, but my vet says she has alot of physical characteristics (teeth, coat, and feet) but her personality is more domestic and she doesn't show "wild" signs.
The last couple days as I edit this and think of what else to say I keep looking at her sleeping in my bed as I type and just smile, she truly makes my life complete !
