I have always had a love/fascination with wolves, researched pros and cons of having a hybrid as a "pet". The first thing I learned was you cannot "own" a wolf mix dog, it is a family member and will take a place in your pack. You need lots of room and alot of patience and time to really get to know your new member. My first experience was rough, Bandit was already 2 years old when I rescued him from the pound. At that time I didn't even know he was a hybrid . After a visit to the vet for shots etc I was informed that he had a mix of border collie and wolf in him. Well that explained his consistent attempt at dominating the home. He was very high strung and it was rough we could not keep him where we lived and had to put him at a family members home in the country. He was not happy there and escaped into the wild. The place we put him was 18 mi from where I lived so we could see him everyday till we could get a place with a large yard, 2 weeks after his escape he was found dead o the side of the road just 6 blocks from my home! I think he was coming to find me, this made me feel severe guilt for leaving him. After another year of researching i found Tasha, A female Malamute and wolf mix. She was 8weeks old and the first time I saw her she cuddled up to my neck and i knew she was the right 1. A female hybrid with it's instinct is much easier to deal with and will not fight as much as a male for a dominate place. My girl is very spoiled and loved. She is my best friend and protector. Tasha is very intelligent, more then any animal I have ever had in my life. Friends and other she comes into contact with are always asking how I "trained" her to do what she does, and how I get her to stay with me (no leash) listening so well. Well I haven't "trained" her I have just told her NO if something is wrong and she stops, the rest I just talk to her and well somehow she seems to understand me and listens. When I stated earlier that she is "spoiled" well that is what most people tell me, but for me it is just loved and cared for. You see I cook for her, she will at times eat some "dog food" but that is just to balance out her diet on the days I can not make her meals. We eat together everyday and she changed my diet so I eat alot healthier now. We enjoy boneless chicken breast with rice and veggies, Roast, steak and on occasion hamburger but she is picky there, NEVER McDonalds, she won't touch it ! I only use low sodium seasoning/bouillon and she loves fish (I don't but she is worth it). Tasha will be 4 years old on the 10th of May and per her vet she is strong, healthy and she loves her too ! Now when it comes to other animals she loves them all, (unless they appear threatening) My girlfriend had a pekineses (see photo) that Tasha would play with and mother (wish I could attach vid) She would swim in the lake and the Ducks would not even flee they would swim with her. Here at home we have a Finch family that fly down around her and eat her crumbs along with a Blue Jay couple that has been using her loose hair for nesting material. Can't wait to see how this might influence the young ones when they start flying. With Humans she is more protective,of me and not sure of many that come around her. She has only come close 2 times to "snapping" at people. Once an old friend at a barbecue came up behind me and did a hello slap on my shoulder and this made her jump over me at him (I caught her ) but he apologized to her for scaring her! The other time another female friend came up to hug me (but didn't get Tashas permission first) and Tasha took a stance between us till I told her it was OK and I let her smell the friend and then I hugged her. It seems to be ok for me to approach others but not them approach me. Now with her being part Malamute she has the partial "speech" ability to mimic sounds ie.. Mama, I luv u, and she is now good at a**hole when my buddy comes over ! Man he loves that. If yo ask her if she loves you she will bow to you and (in a dog voice) say "i love you " back.

She can do most basic tricks sit, bow, five, but the one I love most is if you ask her if she is sexy she will howl at you and it sounds like a long WOOO HOOO! Now I now someone will ask what percentage of wolf she is, but What you read in ads and such are guesses, the only way to really tell is testing and I can't afford it, but my vet says she has alot of physical characteristics (teeth, coat, and feet) but her personality is more domestic and she doesn't show "wild" signs.

The last couple days as I edit this and think of what else to say I keep looking at her sleeping in my bed as I type and just smile, she truly makes my life complete !

I'm a guy but I get choked up about stuff like this as well. Domesticated animals are a gift from God to us humans, bundles of joy who could care less about which party was in the White House or how much we paid in taxes last year. They can magically take us away if only for a few moments to a land where person and animal are all that matter.

Dogs in particular have an uncanny empathy for people, able to read our emotions and respond to help us when we need it. Cats are typically more aloof, but not all. When I was a kid my aunt and uncle who lived around the block had a Siamese named Robby. This cat loved people and would jump into my lap for a petting, purring away which my cousins described as "his motor running" LOL.

Some people bond with birds, others with horses, and some with ferrets. Around 1990 my brother made friends with a woman who kept an iguana in her house. Bro asked, "Where is her cage?" Kira replied, "We sleep in her cage," implying the iguana had freedom to roam around the house. Bro gave me a photo of Kira's bed with two pillows on it. Sticking out from one pillowcase was the tail of the iguana. Kira had also housebroken a pet snake.

Final animal (not pet though) story. My neighbor across the street has a large two-story house. One day while working upstairs he heard a rustling sound from underneath some stuff, so he pulled away the clutter to find -- you can't make this stuff up -- a mouse and a snake sharing a nest. Strange bedfellows indeed!

Great stories Rick! The Iguana one reminded me, after I lost Bandit I got a Chinese water dragon, then ended up with 5 of them they each had a 50gal Aquarium but I let them run free when I was home, I had to get rid of them after I got Tasha cause she wanted to play with them and I got tired of moving the fridge trying to get them back into the aquariums. One afternoon we (the dragons and I ) were watching tv, my largest one (I called her Bandi after Bandit) used to sit on my shoulder and seemed to enjoy staring at the tv, then it happened, she pissed down my shoulder and OMG the smell and I was AMAZED at how much a little lizard good pee !!! but they are fun and easy to care for pets ! Thanks for stopping by !!

Oh Tired I'm so sorry about Bandit. He was gorgeous too! Tasha is just beautiful, and you both are so lucky to have each other. You're really lucky she gets along well with other animals. I have to keep an eye on Zsa Zsa. She's very stubborn. If she decides she doesn't like another animal, it's either separate them, or they're a goner. I know what you mean about how you can approach others, but before they can approach they need Tasha's permission. Mine aren't quite that protective, but they have showed signs of it. One time a male neighbor came by to say hi, and without warning he put his arm over the fence. I could tell something changed in Zsa Zsa. I told him, "Uh you might want to put your arm back over the fence". lol I can't believe she can talk too!!! I'm so jealous!! Great article, and great Tasha. Thank you for writing it. See begging works. lol :)

Thanks so much for all the kind words ! The really funny part that I left out of my story is with my mother. When I first talked of getting another hybrid, oh man my Mom was so against it pointing out the stories of how some lady that had nine of them in Ca. fell in their kennel and I guess knocked herself out and the dogs ate on her. Well I looked up the story and found that she kept them in a narrow long run (that should have been for 1 dog not 9) and fed them road kill, and raw meat. Well I guess she should of thought things thru more and been careful ! Anyway enough of that story back to my mom. She now has changed her tune so much and shows everyone she meets pictures of her "grand dog" and tells them all about her ! She also helps me out alot with food since I have been out of work the last few months (god bless her ) but I have to laugh when she brings food, it is usually pork roast, fish and cheese. This is nice but I am lactose intolerant allergic to pork and hate fish ! So guess who that is for... Ya the dog I wasn't suppose to get ! My mom i sa smoker and when she comes over to visit us she always has some wintergreen mints with her and well Tasha seems to love them so gets 1 or 2 everytime mom comes by! I get such a kick out of the "change" in attitude since she has got to know her grand dog!

lol I know what you mean Tired. My mother in law is not that much of an animal person, but she sure loves Ray Ray. She usually doesn't let animals eat off of her plates, but Ray Ray always gets his own plate now. lol Did you tell your Mom that you'd like to eat too? lol ;)

Incredibly beautiful! Thanks for sharing the wonderful story.

My dogs are such great companions and I couldn't imagine life without them.

My English Setter, "Bailey", literally nursed me through cancer and chemo, my Bichon Frise, "Birdie", is a sassy little nag, and our Yellow Lab, "Abby", has no idea she's a dog. We are such a happy "pack"!

My cousins used to have a wolf hybrid in the family. Her name was "Pug" and she was huge, strong, loyal, and definitely a member of the family. Pug died of old age (and boy was she old indeed!!!!!) but during her life she took kindly to strangers, and even watched over the kittens that the cats had. Wolf hybrids are amazing and beautiful.

Hi Tire

The batteries were dead in both my cameras so I borrowed the neighbors new fangled high tech one. Wow, I hate all those electronic digital thingies and scanners, they damn near gave me a cranial hernia but I worked through it. From idea to reality at the speed of light, or electricity, I think there the same, give or take a couple of nanoseconds. I just stepped into the 21st century. Tomorrow I’ll try to get some good ones on the bike but I had to get these out to you if I can figure out this link thing. My Dogs.

I just got a baby Chow and brought it home to my three year old Sheltie. They began a real relationship today-4 days in. Tickled me pink!

My daughter is getting a hybrid this weekend that is "suppose" to be 87% wolf, he looks like it with the yellow eyes and all but I told her to ask for a copy of the DNA test because anything else is BS, Too many sellers try to convince people of high wolf content dogs and well mathmatically it just don't add up ! Thanks for stopping by !! (and glad you had a good trip !)
